This project provides grocery stores across the United States with climate-friendly refrigerants. Currently, most refrigerants in the market are HFCs, which are still potent GHGs. By replacing HFC refrigerants with low-GWP alternatives like R-744 (CO2), projects can offset GHG emissions associated with manufacturing and operating HFCs. R-744 is a low GWP and zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) refrigerant.

The global warming power of most HFC refrigerants is thousands of times greater than carbon dioxide that are found in many cooling applications including residential HVAC systems, automobiles and large commercial buildings. The project recovers and reuses HFC refrigerants enabling the HVAC industry to transition away from the use of ozone depleting or potentially high global warming refrigerants and avoid harmful emissions to the atmosphere.

Project ID: 1480

Phase I of the project activity involves the installation of an absorption column that will convert NOx to nitric acid via a high-pressure water absorption process. This absorption column will allow the Thermal Reduction Unit (TRU) to accept a higher percentage of the flow from the adipic acid plant, resulting in a higher quantity of N2O destroyed.
